Create a Static Website in Azure | Super simple

Welcome to the world of hassle-free website hosting on Azure! In just 5 minutes, you can have your static website up and running in an Azure storage account. It's not only incredibly easy but also highly cost-effective. With Azure Storage, you can host static websites containing HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and image files, all without the need for additional infrastructure or a web server. This makes Azure Storage's static website hosting an excellent choice for scenarios where a full-fledged web server isn't necessary to deliver your content.

  1. Log in to the Azure Portal and create an Azure storage account.

  2. Go to Storage account - Static website, and provide default names for your website, this is your homepage and Error page, Click Save.

  3. After saving, you will get a URL.

  4. Now, in the containers of the Storage Account, you will see a new container called $web. This is where you need to place your website content.

  5. Add the contents of the website to this folder, if you have folders with the contents, you need to go to the storage browser – blob containers – Add directory.

  6. Make sure the homepage (index.html) and error page in the root.

  7. Now that the website is published, you can access it from the URL in step 3, Static website – Storage account.

Pricing and Statistics

Hosting a static website does not incur additional costs other than the blob storage utilization costs. It calculated by

  • The volume of data stored per month.
  • Quantity and types of operations performed, along with any data transfer costs.
  • Data redundancy option selected.

Statistics Enable

You can enable traffic statistics on the $web container to report on the website access.

  1. Click Metrics on the Storage account
  2. Select Metric Namespace – Blob, Metric – Egress, Aggregation – Sum

  3. Click Add filter, Property – API name, Value – GetWebContent.

This is how quickly you can publish a static website from a storage account. In my next post, I will talk about how you can configure a custom domain to the static webpage using the Azure front door.

I hope this post is helpful.

Thank you.
